Traditional Territory Acknowledgement
We acknowledge and honour that our school is located on land that has been here since the beginning of time. This land was most recently settled on the traditional territories of Lkungen (Lekwungen) peoples and is unceded land known as Metchosin, west of Victoria on Vancouver Island, BC. It has been an area rich with resources that we share with our neighbouring relations of Scia’new and T’ Sou-ke (Sooke) First Nations.
As we move forward, we wish to learn and develop relationships with one another to respect and understand the traditions and lifestyle of the Coast Salish peoples. We wish to challenge the legacies of colonialism.
We acknowledge and thank the Lkwungen People for allowing us to live, work and play on their lands. We give thanks to the ancestors, hereditary leaders and matriarchs, creatures big and small for looking after the rich resources and cultural teachings of this beautiful land.
Many of the skills we practice and teach have come from a long line of oral tradition and daily use from First Nations, Metis and Inuit all across the country. We are grateful for the teachers we have had in our lives and for the people who continue to hold the tradition of these skills.
The word "Sc'ianew" (pronounced CHEA-nuh) translates from the Klallum language as "the place of the big fish", indicating the richness of the sea life in the region that sustains the Sc'ianew and neighbouring First Nation communities with food, shelter, medicine and clothing.
Lkwungen means “place to smoke herring” Lkwung means “to smoke herring” and Lkwungen’athun refers to the language of the land. Lkwungen traditionally and still to date unites the Esquimalt and Songhees peoples as one family.
Supporting the Whole Child
At Wise Earth Forest School, we care for the whole child to be seen, heard and nurtured.
We create opportunities to address all the facets of being a human - physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual beings and of being a member of the universe. We strive for children to feel safe, healthy, engaged, supported and challenged to grow.
This program teaches nature based curriculum, knowledge and skills in a playful and experiential way for children age 5-10. We use the 8 Shields approach, developed with Coyote Mentoring by Jon Young.
Learning takes place in the outdoors as well as in an indoor classroom creating rich connections and applications for the forest knowledge and skills.
Sparking joy and Wonder
It is our pleasure to facilitate play and inquiry based learning, and to customize activities and lessons based on the passions and interests of the children in our care.
Their imagination, creativity and curiosity are incredible gifts.
This challenges us to create inspiring and magical opportunities for children to learn in the natural world.
